EXPRESS PRENATAL SUPPLEMENT CONSULT

Looking For The Best Prenatal Supplement For You And Your Future Baby?

Our 30 minute online express prenatal supplement consultation is here to provide you with expert advice – not what Instagram Ads are telling you to buy!

Iron? Vitamin D? Choline? Finding The Right Prenatal Supplement Sounds Like A Daunting Process.

It doesn’t need to be! Despite our best efforts, even the most well-rounded diet still has some gaps. However, there’s a simple way to find the right supplement for you.

Let’s face it; there are a lot of prenatal supplements on the market. They all claim to be the best at what they do, but how can that be when there are so many of them? After all, they can’t all be the best! With all of the choices available to us, it’s no surprise if you feel overwhelmed and confused when it comes to choosing the right prenatal supplement for you.

That’s just the thing— choosing the right one for you. Every body is different in that your body may need more of certain prenatal vitamins or minerals based on your medical or family history, age, blood results or body size. It was confusing enough before when there was a larger-than-life shelf full of prenatal supplements in front of you begging you to pick the right one, but now there are so many additional factors to consider that we wouldn’t blame you if you felt like giving up.

Whatever you do, procrastinating on a prenatal vitamin choice is not a good idea! We should, in fact, be starting a prenatal supplement at least 3 months before actively trying for a baby. And did you know, that some people trying to conceive with certain medical histories require up to 10 times more folic acid than the rest of the population from pre-conception through to the end of your first trimester?!Taking a prenatal supplement prevents nutrient deficiencies and builds up stores in your body, helping to avoid neural tube defects such as spina bifida (FSANZ, 2016) in your unborn baby.

Only 4 Out Of 534 Women In A Recent Study Were Able To Meet Nutrient Targets For Folate, Calcium, Iron, And Zinc

Yes, you read that right! Only 4 out of 534 women in a recent study published by our very own Kaylee Slater APD were able to meet their nutrient targets for folate, calcium, iron, and zinc from their diet alone! Results from this 2020 study revealed we need to be considering the practical use of a prenatal multi-vitamin from pre-conception through to post-partum alongside a nutritious diet.

What Could Be Influencing Your Prenatal Supplement Needs?

Your individual dietary needs depend on a number of different factors, including:

Medical History

Women with Coeliac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis) or those who’ve had bariatric or weight loss surgery require more folic acid due to potentially reduced absorbance in the gut (RANZCOG guideline, 2017).

Dietary Patterns

Are you vegan, plant-based or vegetarian, or just don’t like fish, seafood or meat? This could influence your prenatal supplement recommendation, including which products meet your preferences and nutrient requirements.

Weight

Women with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 may need additional folic acid to support a healthy pregnancy (RANZCOG guideline, 2017).

Blood Work And History Of Nutrient Deficiencies

Iron, vitamin D or B12, calcium, zinc, and iodine are common deficiencies we see, just to name a few! With 1 in 5 women being iron deficient and 1 in 4 being vitamin D deficient, this is definitely a key consideration when it comes to finding the right supplement for you!

If You’re Already Pregnant

During each trimester, you have different nutritional demands (and symptoms, too), so let a fertility and pregnancy dietitian tailor your supplementation to you and your current needs to ensure you’re nourished and comfortable (bye bye yucky supplement side effects of constipation and nausea!)

Other Factors

We’ll ask you additional questions about your health, lifestyle, and medical history and goals to create a tailored plan for you and your needs.

Great question! We use a combination of key pieces of information to design our prenatal supplementation plans for you.

  • Your medical history – some medical conditions may mean you need more or less of certain prenatal nutrients.
  • Your age – the sad reality is that as we get older, our fertility does decline. There is research about specific nutrients and supplements we can utilise to help with egg and embryo quality associated with age-related quality decline.
  • Your fertility history and goals.
  • Your medications – some supplements and medications don’t mix, or may mean you need more of a certain nutrient in your plan!
  • Your diet – your dietary quality can impact our recommendations, as well as any dietary preferences and cultural needs – e.g. vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian, Halal, gluten-free, dairy-free, lactose-free or allergens.
  • Your body size – people in larger bodies require more of the key prenatal nutrients, so we need to assess whether there is an increased demand for critical nutrients like folate and vitamin D to support your reproductive health and fertility.
  • Your blood work – provides us insights regarding your nutritional status, alongside some general health parameters to help us customise your recommendations.

We take all these factors into account and your preferences and perspectives to provide a customised prenatal supplement plan recommendation for you!

We offer guidance on where you can purchase the supplements we recommend. After all, you can have the best supplement plan, but if you can’t access it to take them, it’s not so great after all then, right? We aim to make this experience as smooth and seamless for you, so we take the headache out of sourcing where you find all your products!

We recommend providing as much information about your health as possible before your consultation so we can tailor our recommendations to your unique circumstances, and bloodwork can be particularly useful! Collate your pathology results from the last 6-12 months before your appointment and email them to us at [email protected]

Please email us after you are booked in and one of our practitioners will review your history and make suggestions for you to request from your doctor, please allow adequate time to see your doctor and arrange these tests so we have the results for the consultation, we require a *minimum* of 48 hours to reschedule your consult without a fee.

You need a few pieces to help get connected to your dietitian at The Dietologist:

  1. A laptop or computer with a webcam and microphone is preferred. A smartphone works too when you’re on the go!
  2. A reliable Wi-Fi or Internet Connection.
  3. A headset or earphones are preferable.
  4. You don’t need to have Zoom installed on your phone or laptop; however, it can make for a smoother experience for you!
  5. That’s it! Click the link in your appointment confirmation email a few minutes before your appointment begins.

We are here to help. If you have any issues with the above, please contact us via email at [email protected]

No. The consultation fee covers the expertise and knowledge of your dietitian and the design of your own bespoke plan and recommendations, which are emailed to you after your session, including where to purchase your products. Due to the individual nature of each supplementation plan, our fee does NOT cover any of the costs of purchasing the supplements or the ongoing costs of re-purchasing your products.

This service is sadly not covered by private health insurance or Medicare; this is an out-of-pocket service, but, we promise it’s worthwhile!
